Nursing Dan Back to Health

Haven't had much time to update. Dan's been really sick with pneumonia since Tuesday night. The doctor gave us a prescription for Avelox and I'm starting to worry that the drug is reacting very badly with him. I'm going to have to try to call in the morning and see if he can discontinue that antibiotic and get on a different one. Hopefully he gets better soon because it ruined his whole birthday yesterday.

I need to really work on getting my blog to look the way I want it too. I hate messing with layouts and colors, but it has to get done ASAP. It's bothering me.

I'm not sure where I found Blogger. Perhaps I had seen that other Zazzlers were using it.
I created my blog to promote my shop and other shops on Zazzle.

My first blog post was on November 19, 2008. It wasn't very lengthy, and it featured a wedding dress postage stamp. It wasn't until my second post that I began talking about myself.

I can't believe that in another month it will be the 2 year anniversary of my blog!

Day 10: Songs I Listen to When I'm Happy, Sad, Bored, Hyped, Mad

I actually don't listen to music as much as I used to. Well, not as often at least.
The only time I really ever listen to music is while we're in the car. I tried listening to music while I do my work, but I become too distracted.

The one time I do listen to music is if I am sad or mad because it calms me down. And I don't listen to a particular song. Some of the main bands I will listen to are Chiodos, Rise Against, Bayside, Underoath.
I just usually go to Pandora and put the Chiodos channel on and they play a variety of different bands.

Well, I haven't done too much within the past few days beside relaxing. I am proud of myself and my team because we bowled great tonight. I'm also proud of this Pike I caught on Saturday.

I'd have to go with Captain Planet. Captain Planet and his gang fought the evils of over-consumption, uncontrolled capitalism, unethical business actions, ignorance, the misuse of nuclear power, poor sanitation, crime, uncontrolled technology, unethical scientific experiments, war, destruction and pollution (from Wikipedia). He had the great super powers other heroes had, too. He had super strength, speed and agility. He could fly. He was telepathic! And he did all of this while rocking the coolest green mullet that you've ever seen.

I wish Captain Planet was still around for the sake of today's youth. Watching him as a child made me want to do everything I could to keep the planet clean. I even tried organizing a neighborhood clean-up crew.

Day 05: A Picture of Somewhere I've Been

This one is kind of hard. I haven't visited too many places and the places I've been to have all been blogged about. I don't want to re-post a picture and be redundant.

This is a picture I took at Silver Lake Sand Dunes. Dan and I used to go there often when we lived in Michigan and had the Jeep. I haven't talked about going there too much in the blog because I didn't have a blog then.

Day 04: A Habit I Wish I Didn't Have

I tend to not finish things that I start.

I'll do things like move a whole room of furniture around and give up half way.
I just get bored very easily, I guess. I do this a lot with my Zazzle store. I'll start making lines of products with a set of photographs I just took. I'll get through completing the first few just fine. By the time I get to my fourth one or so I get bored and move onto another photo before finishing with the one I started.

Hopefully I can finish this 30 days. :)

I've only been to three others states other than where I live and one other country. I've gone through Indiana, only to get to Illinois. I lived in Illinois for 2 years. I visited Wisconsin a couple times during the time I spent in Illinois. And I've been to Canada, once. Just to go shopping, nothing special.
I am an Aquarius and my boyfriend is a Pisces.
My middle name is Rae.

I will beat you on Mario Kart Wii or Mario Kart: Double Dash. You're neither a threat or challenge.

This is the Beginning

Well, the change is all due to my insomnia. I've named my blog, I redid the layout and I cleaned it up a bit. The operation of the blog is changing, too. No more Monday Memories. No More Friday's Funny. I don't feel that I was giving those weekly themes my all, and I don't want to half ass this thing. I asked for questions to have answered, and I received one, which I will answer at the end of this post. I also received a comment from a favorite blogger of mine, Kim Ayres. He suggested that I take a challenge that a friend of his is doing. It's called 30 Days of Me and will start tomorrow.

Hey Jas,
What's your favorite genre of music. What get you high (excluding drugs).

If I had to pick just one genre of music, I couldn't. I'm open to a lot of music. Except for country. Country really irks me. I like a lot of rock music, especially from the 90's. And of course, there is a lot of current music I like. Rise Against and Chiodos being two of my favorites.

I suppose photography could be my high. I could spend a lot of money in a camera shop, and I can spend a lot of time just being outside, alone, with a camera.

Thanks for the opportunity to share a little about myself. There will be a lot more to be learned once I start this 30 day thing tomorrow.

On account of lack of preparation, this entry is going to be quite short.

Being younger, I remember my grandma driving all over the state to to find the latest Beanie Baby she needed for her massive collection. We went to McDonald's, Hallmark and just about every store that carried the bean-filled animals. My favorite thing about going with her was getting to read the poems on their tags. I even owned a few Beanie Babies myself. I wasn't collecting them like she was, but I did enjoy playing with them.

Dinner Ideas

One of my tasks each day is to come up with something for dinner. I like to keep it as simple as I can, but I need to come up with a variety of options besides spaghetti and chicken with brown rice.

Last night we had baked Tilapia and salad.

The Tilapia was bought fresh at the fish counter at my local grocery store. I brought it home and squeezed a lemon over it and then added McCormick Herb with Lemon Seafood Rub and McCormick Perfect Pinch Parmesan Herb seasoning. I baked it at 375 degrees for about 30 minutes.

The salad was just lettuce, orange bell peppers, dried cranberries, feta cheese and Garlic Expressions for the dressing.

I'd like to ask all of you for your simple dinner suggestions. I'm starting to run out of ideas on my own.

Monday Memories - My First Sale on Zazzle

I joined Zazzle on Feburary 10, 2008. When I joined I added a few of my photographs to some products and then I purchased some clipart and did the same with that. I was new to the site and wasn't sure what to expect, but I was disappointed because of the lack of sales and kind of left my shop alone for awhile.
On March 14 I checked my email and noticed someone had purchased something, so I logged into my account to check it out. To my surprise I had sold 40 books of postage stamps somewhere in Oregon. I only had my royalty set at 10% (because I didn't know much about changing prices) and made a whole $21.60! It was only eight days later when I received my second sale, but for the SAME item by a totally DIFFERENT customer! By that time I was smart enough to change my royalty, haha.
I think that was the little motivation I needed to have me continue work harder everyday.

Trip to Warren Dunes

I made a little trip with Dan and our friend Andy to Warren Dunes for the day to meet up with some friends of mine from Chicago. I prepared for a cold day and it ended up being 80 degrees, hot and very sunny. So much for wearing real shoes and bringing a hoodie. While I waited for my friends to arrive, the three of us ventured through this wooded area down a little creek. I was regretting that I didn't have water shoes and feared I'd get bit by a water snake or a crayfish. Perhaps I'd get attacked by a leech? We hit a point where we had to go back and retrieve my friends and then we set back out down the creek. We made it further down this time and I became a little more nervous. The water started to get deeper and there was a manifestation of water spiders everywhere. This meant there were frogs around, and Dan and Andy took the opportunity to try and catch them. If there were frogs around, then there were snakes. I decided not to stick around and the girls and I left Dan and Andy behind and hiked up a hill on the side to get to the safety of the dry land. Despite being frightened, I did enjoy being back there. Here are a couple pictures.

We enjoyed the rest of the day by just hanging around the beach and concession area.

I didn't take a lot of pictures. Just one of the beach and one of a sand dune.

On another note, some of you who visit may have noticed a change in the URL. I'm no longer calling the blog Zazzle Elite and I purchased a domain. I'm in the process of thinking of what I'd like to title my blog. I'm sticking with my name until then.

On This Day

I can't believe it's been almost 10 years. Time goes by fast.

On this day nine years ago I was 11 years and starting my first year of middle school. The school year was still young and I hardly knew my way around the brand new building.

On this day nine years ago I was transitioning from Science to Choir. The hallways were silent and the atmosphere was heavy and tense. No one had heard the breaking news, but I think everyone had the same strange feeling. We sensed something wasn't right.

On this day nine years ago I sat down on a cold hard chair amongst my peers and waited for class to begin. Instead of warming up our voices, our teacher turned on the T.V. and we watched the events unfold. We listened to the reporters cover what little information they had.

On this day nine years ago I was confused. My teacher was distraught and everyone was mute. I had never heard of the World Trade Center or terrorists. We continued the school day on lock down. We were not aloud outside for recess. Some kids went home.

This day will never be forgotten. Though I was too young to understand the severity of the situation nine years ago, I remember where I was and how I felt.

My vacation went over alright, though it could have been better.
Dan and I didn't get much fishing in. I caught a Crappie and he caught a Bass.

I tried to play with the camera a little. I had very little inspiration so this is all I got to.

Summer is coming to an end and will soon be replaced by the fall season. I think autumn is probably my favorite season of the year. The weather isn't too hot and it's not very cold. I love feeling comfortable in a t-shirt and a light jacket.

There are many things I enjoy during this time such as fishing, Halloween, Thanksgiving and pumpkin pie ice cream -- just to name a few. One thing I especially enjoy is hanging out around an apple orchard. There is nothing better than enjoying a few doughnuts and sipping a warm cup of apple cider on a crisp autumn day.
And I love picking fresh apples to bring home to eat or make applesauce with. Let me tell you, we have the best apples in Michigan. :)

Buying decorations for your wedding doesn't have to be expensive. Here are some of my own personal tips for buying decor for your special day.

Just a couple days ago I was visiting the local Dollar Tree and noticed a sign in one of their aisles for their online website. I wondered how it all worked and decided to check it out myself.
It's pretty cool because you can buy almost anything you would find in the local store right from your computer. The only downside I found is having to buy in bulk. I browsed around and wondered, "What the heck would I ever need any of this stuff in large quantities for?" And then it hit me... wedding decor!
For those who regularly follow my blog, you know that I've tried to make wedding planning easier with My Customized Wedding, where you can find all of your wedding stationary needs and more.
Now I am going to share with you how to decorate your wedding on a budget.

I think it's pretty safe to say you can buy all your decorations through the Dollar Tree. Here are some fun ideas that you can take and make your own.

Candlelit Centerpieces

For this look you can buy these simple glass candleholders.
Next choose tealights in accommodation with your wedding theme. On the site I found these particular colors and scents -

To compliment your tealight, choose some sort of filler for the bottom of the candleholder. The picture above features assorted gravel but you can choose from other rocks and gems.

Floral Arrangements

Arrange your flowers in a simple vase and add a ribbon for an elegant finish.
Another fun idea is to apply the same filler technique we used on the candleholders to the vases.
I think it is particularly nice for an outdoor or beach themed wedding.

Numbering Tables

These mini frames are perfect for numbering the reception tables so your guests can find their seats.
If you'd like an even fancier look you can purchase table cards and frame them in a 4x6 frame.

Monday Memories - Breaking Curfew

It was a cold winter night on February 13, 2005. My best friend (at the time) and I layered ourselves in ridiculous clothing and headed out into the night. We walked two long miles in the freezing rain until we reached our destination: the local Farmer Jack. Farmer Jack was one of the big grocery store chains at this time and most of them were open 24 hours day. I'm not sure what our reason for going there was. It was probably because it was the only thing open at 12:00 AM and we didn't feel like being stuck at my place.

Upon arriving to the store, we grabbed a grocery cart and decided to just walk around the whole store.
I think we probably pretended to grocery shop, I'm not sure. I remember buying bagels and cream cheese and the cashier told us we could sit in the cafe area and use the toaster for our bagels. We thanked her and went on our way. As we were enjoying our bagels and reading magazines at the table, we noticed two police officers walk in the entrance. I knew they hadn't come to grocery shop, and had a feeling they were there for us.

The two of us immediately freaked out. We jumped up from our table and ran into the aisles. We now were trying to plan our escape. My friend suggested we try to get into the bathroom and sneak out a window, but I was doubtful there were any windows in there. I decided I would talk our way out of the situation, and we walked down the frozen food aisle until we met up with the two officers.

The officer asked us for identification and I told him that I was only 15 and didn't have any. He told us we would be heading down to the police station and I knew we were screwed. I asked him if he could just drive us home because we only lived down the road. He looked at me firmly and snarled, "We're not a taxi service." Sweet, who's going to pick us up from a police station at 2:00 in the morning? The officers escorted us outside and began to search us for knives, guns, drugs or any other illegal thing that could be on us.
As they searched, they asked us if we had anything they should know about. "Well, this isn't my jacket," my friend replied as she began to dig around in the pockets. The officer yelled at her as he put his hand on his taser gun. Luckily she pulled her hands out quickly and avoided a possible electroshock.

After their search they threw us in their car and left us there while they talked about our impending doom.
My friend cried in the backseat and I tried to tell her everything would be fine. I was still trying to think of how to get out of the situation. I knew her mom probably wouldn't let her hang out with me anymore. The only crime we committed was being out late. No one was killed, no drugs had been consumed and we didn't steal anything at the grocery store. I felt that taking us to the station was unnecessary, but there was no talking them out of it. She continued to cry as the officer got into his car, turned the key and Everybody in the Club Gettin' Tipsy blared from the speakers. We couldn't help but forget all the trouble we were in and just laugh our asses off. I think the big bad officer was embarrassed because he turned down the radio quickly and asked me where I lived. They must have talked it over and decided it was a waste of their time to take us to the station and decided to take us home instead.

I was happy to be home, my mom was pissed and my friend's parents never found out. The End.

Dan and I made the most delicious burgers for dinner earlier. I talked about them before (Some Things Must Come to an End) and how we bought them from the Whole Foods Market. You can read all about their meat here.

Crock-Pot Chicken Recipe

I experimented with my Crock-Pot again last night. I'm not exactly sure what the name of this dish is, because there are so many different variations. The three main ingredients I used were chicken breasts, cream of mushroom soup and cornbread stuffing.

My Crock-Pot is small and it's only setting is low, so keep that in mind when making this dish yourself.
I took two boneless skinless chicken breasts and set them on the bottom of the stoneware. I also sprinkled some freshly grated Parmesan cheese on top.

You want to mix about two cans of cream of mushroom soup in a bowl with milk, but be careful not to make it too runny. I like to keep it thick. After you have your mixture, lay this on top of the chicken breasts. I made the mistake of only using one can, and after it had been cooking for awhile it evaporated and I added in the second can later.

After you put your soup on top, put in a box of your favorite flavored stuffing. I used cornbread.
It barely fit in my little Crock-Pot, and I'm sure if I had started off with two cans of soup I really wouldn't have been able to fit it in. I also put about a tablespoon of butter on top of the stuffing.

While the dish cooked, I stirred the stuffing a little bit so it could get moist. I didn't stir until about an hour and a half after it started cooking, and I only stirred it once in awhile. You don't want the stuffing to be too wet and mushy, but you definitely don't want it too dry. I wasn't even sure how long I should cook it for. I put it on about 12 in the afternoon and unplugged it when Dan came home at 6:30 for dinner. I think it could have been completely ready within 5-6 hours.

We weren't sure how to get everything out of the dish, so we just scooped it out. The chicken was delicious and it just fell apart. The stuffing and soup mixed together was AMAZING. I would definitely make this again and I think it's on the list of one of our favorite dishes.

Monday Memories - Uncovering Stereotypes

Back in middle school I had a good friend that I did everything with. Her and I would go everywhere, despite the fact we didn't have a car to get around in. We had the next best thing - a bike.

For some reason, one day we decided we had wanted to go to the public library. It was summer, it wasn't very close and we really had no idea how to get there. None of that stood in our way. I hopped up on the handle bars of that bike and we drove around trying to figure out what roads to take to get to the library.
I knew it was past the highway. So my friend pedaled the bike with me on her handlebars on the shoulder of the highway. I'm sure everyone was confused as they drove past us going 70 mph while we were wobbling along at the side. We tried finding a way off but we couldn't cross until we got to the bridge up ahead. I don't remember exactly what happened between then and when the cop pulled up to us. I figured I would handle all the talking and I went up to his window and he told me that a driver had called us in. As I was listening to him go on and on about how unsafe and illegal it was, I couldn't help but notice a white and chalky residue around his mouth. He must have been enjoying a nice powdered doughnut right before rushing over to where we were and forgot to clean up his face. I had never believed in the stereotype until that day...

Through Tired Eyes

I know, I skipped yesterday's weekly post. I'm busy getting everything ready for my sister's birthday party this afternoon. I don't think I've slept in the past couple days and all I want is a Full Throttle so that I can think and properly function. I'm getting ready to head out to the mall to find a present for her.
I was up late last night baking and decorating a gluten free cake. Did you know that Betty Crocker has a whole line of products that are gluten free? I baked a devil's food cake with whipped buttercream frosting and decorated it with icing and sprinkles, hello cavities. :)
I'm not a baker, nor do I play one on T.V., but hopefully the cake turns out well for the party.

Tonsil Stones

Warning: This is very gross, and if you've never heard of these prepare yourself. You may want to put your breakfast sandwich down.

For as long as I can remember, possibly 10 years back, I've coughed up these little white balls from time-to-time. They are white (they can be a yellowish color for some) and they are the most foul smelling thing I have ever experienced. I never asked a doctor, and for some reason I didn't Google it.
I didn't think anyone else had my problem. I thought I was the only one in the whole world who coughed these up. Then finally the other night I coughed up one bigger than any other I've ever had and my throat became sore. I coughed up a second one shortly after, something else that I've never done.

I pulled up Google and started typing "coughing up little w...." and Google already knew what I was trying to say. I read through a few sites and came to the conclusion of these being Tonsilloliths, or commonly known as tonsil stones.
I learned that this has only just recently been understood in the oral care community and people are often misdiagnosed. For a long time it was thought to be extra food debris. I thought that myself, or maybe even some weird hard booger. These stones form in the pockets of a person's tonsils. They are formed as small food particles, mucus and bacteria combine and calcify.

So what does it mean to have tonsil stones? Well, first of all they don't cause any physical harm. That was good news to me, because I was afraid it was going to be some life altering condition. These stones can also be an indication of bad breath. It is a lot more common than I had suspected and adults are at a higher risk than children.

A few tips I've read on getting rid of these stones include:

gargling frequently with warm salt water
limiting your dairy intake
picking them off yourself with q-tips
antibiotics
having your tonsils removed

I don't really want to have my tonsils removed, especially because it's so unnecessary. So is taking antibiotics or even picking them off of your throat. (yuck)
I am going to try gargling warm salt water and limiting my dairy. Dairy encourages the buildup of mucous and calcium.

I hope this provides some sort of relief to those of you who have the same problem and weren't sure of the diagnosis. For those of you who haven't experienced these, I hope you have gained some knowledge in case you develop them or know of someone who does. I wish I would have known this information sooner. The river was really nice on Saturday for tubing down the Au Sable. I didn't really take my camera out until we went to Iargo Springs on Sunday afternoon. I'm working on getting everything into my store and have only made postcards so far.

Chest Pains

For the last couple days I've been having this bad chest pains, so I haven't been able to do too much beside lay in bed. I'm hoping it doesn't stick around through the weekend because I'm going up north for our fourth annual camping and tubing trip down the Au Sable River. (see last year's post)

I think through all my craziness I forgot to update about Dan's job search. He is in his second week of work.
It's close to where we are staying right now and he enjoys it. Now we just need to save up some money and look around for houses.

I came across Katie's Krops from a Yahoo article. This girl started off with one seed at the age of 9 and grew her own 40 lb. cabbage that she donated to a local food shelter. Watch this video about Katie's story and how she's fighting hunger.

Katie is truly an inspiration to everyone. She can't do this all alone, though. If you would like to help her organization check out their wish list and see what needs to be donated. Her goal is to have a garden in all 50 states that will go straight to people in need. I sent a message over to Katie to tell her about Zazzle to help raise money for the things they need. Monday Memories - A Lack of Privacy

I got the idea for this week's post from Retail in Review (see Cell Phone Etiquette).
As I was reading what you should and shouldn't do with your cellular device while at the store, it made me think of something that happened at work when I was in Illinois and working at the movie theater.
We have customers come up to us all the time when they are on the cell phones, but my experience was truly unique. This lady starts walking up to my line while she's talking on her phone. Some people try to hurry off the phone so they can make their transaction, some people don't. She was one of those who choose not to.
Instead of staying in her car and finishing what in my opinion is a very private conversation, she decides to stand right in front of me. I think she didn't want me to feel left out, which was very nice of her.
I awkwardly stood there and listened to her talking to what was either a family member or a close friend about how she was losing her house. She was asking to borrow some huge amount of money, and then she thanked them profusely. After her long drawn out five minutes of thanks, she hung up and purchased a $10 movie ticket from me. And it wouldn't surprise me if she walked into the theater and bought a nice big tub of popcorn and a giant drink. Now, I'm not trying to be judgmental, but if you're on the edge of losing your house maybe you shouldn't be going out to the movies, especially an evening show. They are half that price in the morning. And you shouldn't be discussing the situation in a public mall. That's my two-cents, and my memory for the week.

I hope you all are enjoying your weekend. Dan and I are just sitting around the house. We made some ribs for dinner and had brownies (that I baked this afternoon) for dessert.
I've been working on a new line of business cards for the baking industry and I'm really excited to announce them. I'm adding many custom colors to the cards. I also made some matching postage stamps and am awaiting approval from the USPS.

While browsing through the forums last night, I came across one of my newest favorite stores.
Terra Prints has a collection of over 500 prints of cities, popular lakes, tropical islands, national parks and so much more from all over the world. They are capable of capturing these images by using a high resolution imaging instrument known as ASTER that flies on NASA's Terra satellite.
